ST MIRREN manager Jack Ross says there is no chance of his players taking their foot of the gas after ensuring they will avoid automatic relegation.

Saints need to take a point at Hibs on Saturday to be sure they avoid a play-off to stay in the Championship after their 5-0 win over Raith Rovers. Even if the Buddies lose only a win for Raith over Ayr United would resign Ross’ side to the play-offs.

Despite the elation of the biggest Saints win since moving to the Paisley 2021 Stadium in 2009 on the final home league game of the season, Ross is convinced his side won’t get carried away with part of a great escape still to be completed.

He said: “Not in that group, those players understand what their target is, it is a brilliant group of players.

“The way they responded to losing a last minute goal last week was great, I trust them and they trust each other.

“They will be desperate to go to Easter Road next week and play in front of a full house and they will respond to that.”

The Buddies have put together a more than impressive run of results to give themselves a chance of avoiding a relegation, which for much of the season looked all but certain.

And Ross has backed his team to go on and finish the job.

He said: “I would’ve taken any manner of win (against Raith) given what the win would mean for us, but to do it in that manner of performance was outstanding.

“Even in March we were five adrift at the bottom. The first goal was to not finish bottom, to achieve that in the manner we have has been outstanding.

“The next goal is not to finish in the bottom two. It’s in our hands, we have a difficult game, but with the way we’re playing and the players we have I believe we can go to Easter Road and be positive.”
