BISHOPTON Judo prospect Connor Wilson hopes that representing Scotland at the Commonwealth Youth Games will prove to be an important step towards his dream of competing at the Olympics.

The 17-year-old was one of 41 athletes named in the Team Scotland squad for the event in the Bahamas from July 18-23.

The Park Mains High School pupil has competed across Europe in Holland, Germany, Spain and Belgium, but says the call to his first international multi-sport event is an opportunity he is extremely grateful for and he is determined to make the most of it.

He said: “I’m delighted, it’s a privilege to represent my country at such a big event.

“I’m very grateful for the opportunity, being the first time Judo has been involved in the Youth Commonwealth Games, it’s even better.

“I’m just going with the mind set of trying my best when I’m out there and seeing what happens, hopefully I can go far and maybe come back with a medal.”

A member of Renfrewshire club Clyde Judo, Connor admits he’s spent time dreaming of competing for Scotland and Great Britain at the full Commonwealth Games and the Olympic Games.

Although he still has a long way to go, he hopes his experience in the Bahamas can help him on his journey.

He said: “It’s my first big multi-sport competitions, so it will be a good experience and hopefully it will help me towards other big multi-sport events in the future.

“I’ve thought about competing at the full Commonwealth Games and the Olympics, it’s a dream.”
