The 2017 Renfrewshire Golf Union Boys and Youth Stroke Play Championship took place on Sunday at Greenock Whinhill Golf Club.

Euan McNeill was the winner of the Boys Stroke Play Championship with Michael McLennan picking up the Youth Stroke Play trophy.

The event has followed a 36-hole format in recent years but was just 18-holes this year and played in tricky conditions, as the Competition Scratch Score was increased to 70 from the Standard Scratch Score of 68.

McNeill, from Lochwinnoch Golf Club, has been undefeated for the Boys Team this year in four outings and shot a 74 to take home the title of Boys Stroke Play champion.

He now hopes to further his golf at the University of Highlands and Islands.

In the youths section, Whinhill Club Champion Jamie Sinnamon set the marker with a round of 70 before McLennan, also playing on his home course of Whinhill, signed off on a 67 to come out on top.

McLennan is expected to receive a considerable cut to his handicap which currently sits at four.

The eight qualifiers from each section now advance to the Renfrewshire Golf Union (RGU) Match Play Championship on Sunday, September 3.

A press release from RGU said: “The courtesy of Greenock Whinhill Golf Club and their hospitality was much appreciated, and also to Inverclyde Council for the generosity given to the Renfrewshire Golf Union in allowing them to play the event there.”
