RENFREW boxer Callen McAulay is targeting an injury-free 2018 as gets set for his next professional fight this month.

The 19-year-old got off to a great start, winning his debut contest back in September.

But it came at a price, with the teenager injuring his hand in the process, ruling him out of action for several months.

The St Andrew’s Sporting Club fighter will be on the Burns Night bill on Thursday, January 18 at the Radisson Blu Hotel, in Glasgow, and is eager to get back in the ring as he looks to rack up another win.

He said: “I want to try and get the full year and get four or five fights and keep building my record.

“I’m still young so hopefully towards the end of the year I can move onto six-rounders, and hopefully have four four-rounders and see how we cope with that.

“And maybe at the end of 2019 move onto looking at titles, but I’ll still only be 21 then so I’m dead young, but that’s the plan for this year.”

The youngster’s opponent is still to be confirmed for the fight later this month, but he’s been busy sparring over the Christmas period as he looks to keep in tip-top shape.

He added: “I’ve been sparring with a few guys from MTK: Ahmed Ibrahim, Calvin McCord and Shaun McShane and the other night I was in with Martin Harkin.”

The boxer is sponsored by Instyle kitchens and bathrooms, and thanked them for their continued support.

He said: “They’re helping me a lot, it helps me a lot with my training, the funding allows me to go down to Newcastle for sparring, and helping me with tickets.”
