Johnstone Burgh have added their first fresh face to the squad of the close season as boss Jamie McKim looks to give his side the best chance of mounting the promotion push he has set out as the target for next season.

Forward Kieron Magennis, brother of St Mirren central midfield star Kyle Magennis, penned a deal this week with Burgh, who finished ninth in the second division after taking points from top sides such as St Anthony’s.

The 21-year-old previously made it into Stirling Albion’s first team squad and last month won the Under-21 Scottish Cup with his latest team Tower Hearts.

Tying down the forward was a top priority for McKim ahead of the first day of pre-season on June 23 and the gaffer shared his excitement at bringing the pacy frontman into the fold.

McKim said: “I’ve known him since he was a young boy, round about under-14s. He’s very, very good, he’s a centre forward, but he can play wide in the forward areas.

“He’s really quick, a good goal threat, so I’m excited to have him on board because he fits exactly what we are looking for.

“I’ve been to watch him recently and he’s really sharp and good in front of goal. I had a couple of meetings with him over the last few weeks in the hope he would come with us and he would sign.”

Magennis, who played in St Mirren’s Academy from five or six years old until the age of 11 before joining Rangers Boys’ Club, also had a stint with Neilston in between his time with Albion and Tower Hearts.

Burgh’s ambition, however, convinced him to make a return to the Juniors with McKim’s side and he has high hopes for the club’s bid to win the league this season.

Magennis said: “Jamie has been brilliant since I first spoke to him. I had a lot of different options, but it captured my attention the way they are running things and the ambitions they have about what they want to do and where they want to get to and I’d like to help them do it.

“I would love to win the league with Burgh and don’t see why we couldn’t. Jamie and the guys have detailed plans and a step-by-step guide about who they want in and I don’t see why we can’t win the league.”

Although he plays in a different position to his younger brother, Kieron insists he has a very similar approach to Kyle, who is currently being linked with a move to join former St Mirren boss Jack Ross in his new role as manager of Sunderland.

Magennis added: “My brother is robust and has flair, he’s got a bit of everything. I’m not too different in that way and we have similar attributes and ambitions when playing. We are very similar.”
