ST MIRREN completed a remarkable turnaround in their season on Saturday as a 1-1 draw at champions Hibs ensured they avoided a relegation play-off.

The Saints took just four points from their first 14 games, but sparked by some shrewd signings in Janaury, they turned the season on its head by going on a run of form no team in the division could match during the run-in.

Jack Ross' side got the draw they required at Easter Road to stay above Raith Rovers and eventually finished seventh ahead of Dumbarton, here's how the players fared on the final day.

Billy O’Brien-7

Made good decisions although had a surprisingly quiet afternoon.

Gary Irvine-7

Yet another solid showing from Irvine before he went off injured in the second half. Has been dependable throughout the season.

Gary MacKenzie-8

Another inspirational display from the defender. Never found wanting positionally and dominant in the air.

Jack Baird-8

Has really stepped up since Harry Davis’ injury, a very assured performance.

Adam Eckersley-7

Eckersley has made a real difference since arriving in January, solving what was a problem position in left back.

Kyle Magennis-8

Attacked well to give Lewis Stevenson plenty to think about on the right and gave Irvine a lot of protection.

Stephen McGinn-7

Struggled to have the same impact he did when the sides met back in March but gave everything and showed terrific composure at times.

Stevie Mallan-7

Didn’t hit the heights he has in recent weeks, but that bar was set very high. His dribble into the box set up Loy’s goal.

Cammy Smith-8

A very good first half, faded slightly in the second half but showed again to be one of Ross’ best signings.

Lewis Morgan-9

Gave David Gray all kinds of problems in the first half and took responsibility to take the game to Hibs when Saints fell behind. His terrific run led to the crucial equaliser.

Rory Loy-8

A great finish and a good all round display from the striker.

Subs

Stelios-6

The Cypriot replaced the injured Gary Irvine and performed well.

Rocco Quinn-5

Brought on late on.

John Sutton-5

Brought on in the closing stages.

Manager

Jack Ross-9

It has been mentioned more than once in these pages the turnaround in St Mirren since February has been remarkable and Ross should be given every credit for that.

Bringing in 10 players in January and letting the same number go is at best risky, in other circumstances it might have been called lunacy, but it more than paid off. Ross drastically improved the squad in just one transfer window and the brand of football being played at the end of the season was in stark contrast to his early games in charge.

Another positive for the club’s fans and board is how much individual players have improved under Ross’ tutelage, that’s always the sign of a good manager. His job now is to ensure he keeps his squad together. If he does that a promotion challenge next season looks likely.
