St Mirren gaffer Jack Ross hailed his side’s desire as they celebrated lifting the Championship trophy with a hard fought win over rivals Morton.

With the league title already wrapped up, the Buddies delighted fans on a beautiful day in Paisley as goals from Danny Mullen and Celtic-bound Lewis Morgan secured the side’s first win over the Ton this season.

Speaking after the game, the delighted manager praised his side’s approach to the “fantastic” occasion.

He told St Mirren’s website: “I think you could see me and James Fowler on the technical area and know how determined we were to win the game.

“I am fortunate that we have a great group of players who trust what we ask them to do.

“The desire from the players to produce a performance in these circumstances, when in essence the hard work is done, is testament to their character.

“For me, there is a real feeling of satisfaction and pride in what this club has done as a collective.”

The win on Saturday was St Mirren’s 14th at home of the season and illustrates the dramatic turnaround in the Buddies’ fortunes since Ross took control of the club.

After Danny Mullen opened the scoring for the Paisley side with a chipped finish, Morton hit back through a Michael Doyle header.

But the points stayed at St Mirren Park as Lewis Morgan’s winner gave fans even more reason to celebrate on Saturday evening.

Ross added: “I’ve said it often enough and played in it as a player – this is a brilliant stadium.

“It was always difficult to replace Love Street but we’ve had to make this pitch a home.

“I’ll try and keep doing my bit with what happens on the pitch, and as a whole club we have to grab this momentum that we’ve created and drive forward again.”
