Vale of Leven 1 Johnstone Burgh 2

BURGH gave their survival chances a major boost ahead of tonight"s clash with Maryhill.

A smash and grab double from Craig Marr saw them leapfrog the Vale and move off the foot of the table.

With boss George Walker away, assistant manager Eddie McKim took charge.

And while he will have been concerned with the first half performance which saw the team struggle to get to grips with their hosts, he will have been buoyed by their determination and clinical finishing.

Vale"s top scorer Mark Pawsey played a key role as the Millburn men took the lead on 40 minutes.

He headed a flighted free-kick from Gordon Martin back across goal and as Burgh keeper Fraser Wilson hesitated, Vale captain Allan Lees nodded in from close range.

But barely 60 seconds later and Marr brought the Burgh back into the match. Gaining possession in midfield, Marr broke forward with pace and finished with a-plomb.

In truth, Burgh were fortunate to reach the break on level terms, but after a key team talk from McKim they returned much sharper for the second half.

Hitman Kevin Adam pounced on a sloppy backpass from Ryan Russell which left Vale keeper Matt Carr stranded.

Adam showed a cool head to round Carr and lay in Barr for the simplest of finishes for his, and his team"s second goal.

It could even have been three, as sub Ross Harvey looked certain to burst the net only to be denied by an impressive Carr save.

Burgh: Wilson, McGarrigle, Donaghy, Cuddihy, Ross, Lennan, Rutherford, Adam, Marr, Chalmers. Subs: Smith, Harvey, D McCready, G McCready.

 Maryhill v Johnstone Burgh, tonight, kick-off 7pm. On Saturday, Burgh are at home to Rutherglen Glencairn, kick-off 2pm.
