Western Park men face month ten

DISILLUSIONED Renfrew Gaffer Dougie Mitchell is gearing up for month 10 of a long and arduous league campaign.

The Frew are set to play their two remaining fixtures against Annbank United and Girvan in June, presumably the first Saturday and then in midweek.

Mitchell, right, has previously put up with being forced to play six games in 12 days last month, but has now been left with a three-week wait for a league fixture from the Scottish Junior Football Association.

He said: 'We took a wee friendly with Arthurlie last week and we have a game against Rutherglen Glencairn this Thursday, so we"re just looking to keep fresh for the last two games.

'But it looks like we will be travelling down to Ayrshire in midweek which is a bit disappointing.'

The Western Park side survived relegation last year with 32 points, a tally which the Frew have already surpassed this season, but Mitchell contests the comfort of safety will not breed complacency.

'We"re safe in the table now, but we want to finish as high up the league as possible,' he said. 'I still want to win these games and if we can get ourselves over the forty-points mark then that will be a fantastic achievement considering where we were before Christmas.'

Mitchell also believes pre-season will be fairly uneventful for the Frew as they look to build on last years" improvement.

He said: 'We are keeping an eye on some of the players in the league and at the moment that"s all we"re doing. We don"t really have a lot of money so any shopping we do will be done wisely. Ideally we"ll be looking for around 18-20 players. I don"t think we could afford anything bigger.

Unfortunately, Renfrew could begin next season without their captain Greg Miller, who has already missed seven months with damaged knee ligaments.

He added: 'Greg is still waiting on the all clear for his injury, but at the moment it doesn"t look too good.

'He"s our club captain and to be without him for this period of time is a bit of blow.

'The only good thing that came from Greg"s injury would be how well Graeme Mort has stepped up to the mantle. He has been one of our most consistent players this season.'

 Renfrew will play newly-promoted Rutherglen Glencairn in a friendly tomorrow (Thursday) at New Southcroft Park, kick-off 7.15pm.
