COLIN Clark reckons Renfrew players are in top shape as their pre-season preparations step up a gear.

The Western Park players have now had four training sessions this summer.

And the Renfrew assistant believes what he has watched so far indicates they are ready to be thrown into match action.

He said: "Training is going well and we are well into it now.

"I think the players have done well and have looked after themselves over the summer.

"The players that have needed to work on their fitness by themselves have done that.

"It wasn't a long break, only four weeks tops.

"So hopefully they will be ready for playing in friendly games.

"There is nothing better than getting you ready for football than playing in games.

"That is the best way to get your fitness up to a high standard."

Renfrew are still in the hunt for new players in the summer transfer market, and Clark revealed they are still looking at a couple of trialists as well.

However, the club will not make a decision on the players until they have judged them in their up-and-coming friendly matches in the Neilston tournament.

He said: "We have a couple of boys on trail just now.

"One is from Kilbirnie and the other is an amateur player.

"But we won't make a decision on players before we see them in games.

"We are playing West Calder and are involved in the Neilston tournament.

"You can't really take anything from seeing new players in training so we will wait three or four weeks before we sign any new players."

Looking ahead to their Sectional League Cup campaign next month, Clark believes they are under more pressure because they are the highest ranked team in the group.

But he is adamant their main objective is hitting the ground running in their promotion bid.

He said: "There are no guarantees we will win our group.

"It is difficult because we are the highest league side in our section so we are expected to win and teams have nothing to lose against us. But the league is without a doubt our priority. We want to get off to a better start and stay in the top half of the table for the majority of the season."
