RENFREW co-boss Martin Ferry believes this season will give the more inexperienced members of the ‘Frew squad a chance to prove their worth to the club.

With seasoned campaigners Graham Mort and Gus Gualt both departing for pastures new, Ferry told Gazette Sport the likes of Anton Chalk and Bryan Mulgrew now have the opportunity to nail down the centre back berths in the ‘Frew backline.

He said: “It looks as though Gus Gualt will be heading to Port Glasgow, and with Morty already away to Clydebank it will give the younger lads a chance to step up and prove they have what it takes to stay in the team.

“Anton Chalk is a prime example and he showed us what he can do when he was in the side last season.

“We also have Bryan Mulgrew who has what it takes to play at centre back, he is someone who has that ability to slot in to the centre back position.” Meanwhile, Ferry’s side has begun pre season training, with the side gathering at Bellahouston Park on Saturday.

‘Frew are preparing for life in the Central District First following last season’s relegation and Ferry hopes the side can put a ‘nightmare’ campaign to one side.

The co-manager is counting down the days to a move to a new stadium — a move he believes will provide a huge boost for everyone involved.

He added: “The ground has been a long time coming and there has been issues for a number of years but it all seems to on its way so I can’t wait for the first brick to be laid.

“It will be interesting to see how we play on the new surface and it will give us a fresh start following last year, where everything just didn’t go our way.

“We just need to stick together and we will be looking for that commitment come the start of the season.” Renfrew are back in action later this month when they travel to Kilbirnie Ladeside for a friendly on Wednesday, July 23.
