RENFREW boss Martin Ferry admits he can’t wait for the season to get underway after three months without competitive football.

‘Frew kickstart their campaign on Saturday away to Port Glasgow in the group stage of the Sectional League Cup, but the Western Park supremo insisted his side will be using the tournament as nothing more than pre season preparation.

He told Gazette Sport: “I’m really looking forward to it, I can’t wait for the season to get going and the football to be back.

“It has been a long summer but this weekend’s matches will give us a chance to assess where we are and what we need to do between now and the campaign beginning.

“We still have a couple of boys on holiday and a few players we are still looking at.

“We have had a look at a number of guys over the course of the friendlies and keeper Mark Baird looks like he could be coming in, he has junior experience and is still young at only 22 or 23-years-old.” “That said, we will be treating the Sectional League Cup as more of a pre season run out and it will provide us with a chance to see where we need to strengthen.” Having retained the majority of last year’s squad, losing only Gus Gualt, Richie Chang and Graham Mort, Renfrew are left with an inexperienced squad for the season ahead.

However, Ferry stressed the side have a season’s experience under their belt and are looking in good shape.

He added: “We will have a young team this year and we are just looking to build upon what we already have.

“As it stands we have a side of 12 men, we are still looking to bring in Scott Arthur from Vale of Leven but the two teams seem to quite far apart in their valuation — we have put a bid in but it has been rejected so it could be a long time before that is done and dusted.

“I would say we have had a solid pre season, we had a difficult game with Kilbirnie and then we had the match against Dalry Thistle where we were by far the better team in my opinion.

“But, it has been a long summer and I can’t wait to get going.”
