GORDON Ion has warned Johnstone Burgh’s Second Division rivals the club can clinch top spot this season.

The right-back scored as Burgh drew 2-2 with title favourites Cambuslang Rangers on Saturday.

And with the Keanie Park side now unbeaten in three matches, Ion is targeting a run of good results to guide the team top.

The 22-year-old told Gazette Sport: “Walking off the park on Saturday, having drawn with Cambuslang, the feeling amongst the squad was disappointment at first.

“To be saying that after taking on the team many have tipped to win the title says it all about how much we’ve improved this season.

“We felt in terms of the game, we deserved to win and when leading 2-0, we probably should have.

“But there were many positives to take from our performance and it’s time for us to kick on now.

“In this division you need to get points on the board early and we’ve done that, and it’s a case of carrying that on now and making sure we’re up there as the season continues.

“There is no doubt we can win the title and that is what we want to do of course, but the main thing is going up this season, be that first, second or third and the management have built a squad which gives us a chance of doing that.” Ion had featured for Burgh in midfield earlier this season, but having returned to his natural right-back slot for the past two matches, he’s aiming to make the position his own.

He added: “It’s good to be in defence again, it’s where I’ve played my whole life and it’s where I want to play for the team.

“I love defending, but it gives me that chance to attack when the situation is right.

“In saying that, if the management believe I can help the team elsewhere, I would always do what I can to help.

“I just want keep working hard this season and hopefully improve as we go along and help the team reach the goal we’ve set of going up and hopefully more.”
