Burgh’s last two games have fallen foul of the weather. Saturday’s Scottish Cup tie with Largs at Keanie Park will now be played this weekend, while their trip to East Kilbride in the league was also postponed.

That means Burgh face at least three weeks without any league action and with most of their rivals having played more games than Burgh’s seven, Smith conceded it is a concern.

He said: “We are starting to fall behind with games in the league. It puts us in a bit of a false position in the table, with the games in hand that we have.

“We are looking to get these games on and get the Scottish Cup tie played so we can get back to the league and try and maintain our promotion push.

“It’s not all bad, some of the results at the weekend went for us.” Smith says he has no plans to strengthen his squad with new signings, although he is looking forward to welcoming back striker Steven Fitzpatrick from a long term injury.

He said: “We’ve got 20 players signed at the moment and we’re quite happy with the squad we’ve got. Steven Fitzpatrick is coming back to fitness, that in itself will be like a new signing because he has been out for that long, since the start of the season.” Burgh currently sit fifth in the Central District Second Division but have games in hand over three of the four teams above them and Smith insists he is happy with his side’s start to the campaign.

He said: “We are just over a third of the way through the season and we are on 14 points, if we can maintain that we are definite promotion candidates.

“We have played most of the top teams in the league bar Rossvale, so we are happy with where we are.”
