Burgh blew the Super League First Division side away with four first half goals at Keanie Park on Saturday, putting their name in the hat for the fourth round draw.

Smith was concerned when his side went one down but he needn’t have worried as Burgh regrouped to upset a team two divisions above Burgh.

He said: “When we went one down I thought it was going to be a long day but we responded right away and pulled one back.

“It’s the best performance I’ve seen from the boys all season, that first half was absolutely tremendous. The reaction to going one down — I’ve never seen anything like that, not in my days at the Burgh anyway. We scored four brilliant first half goals, we were delighted.” Despite Largs playing in a higher division Smith insists his team were always confident they could progress in the cup.

He said: “To be honest the boys have got the belief, we don’t fear anybody, we know what we are capable of on our day and that’s not just me saying that, all the boys believe it.

“We knew we could at least compete with them and possibly get the result. We played them pre-season and beat them. I know that doesn’t amount to much but we knew what they were capable of and what we are capable of.” Burgh return to league duty on Saturday with a trip to Millbrun Park to face Vale of Leven. Smith believes their cup heroics will give the squad confidence to maintain their promotion push.

He said: “The boys are absolutely buzzing after this result, it can only be good for them to know that they can compete and beat teams in the higher leagues so hopefully they can take that into the league.

“When you go to Vale of Leven it is always a hard game, smashing park and surface which will suit us. They are on the up at the moment so it’ll be a hard game.”
