Burgh have enjoyed something of a renaissance under the leadership of Smith and co-manager David Brolly with the Keanie Park side sitting just outside the promotion spots — and continued their form with a 5-3 win over Vale of Leven at a drenched Millburn on Saturday.

He said: “Everything is going to plan so far — the target has always been promotion and if we continue the way we are going then I don’t see any reason why we can’t achieve our goals.

“Rossvale are obviously the team to beat right now but if we can keep it tight at the back and score a few more then we will be in good shape and be able to challenge them.

“The spirit and togetherness is fantastic.

“We have a great bunch of guys, the likes of Gareth Brown bring good experience and are fantastic around the dressing room and at keeping spirits high.

“Then we have the younger guys, they are something else... let’s just say that they keep me on my toes.” Following their 4-2 triumph over Largs Thistle a fortnight ago, Burgh have been drawn away to Lesmahagow in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup — and hopes remain high.

With the way the draw has panned out, a win could see Burgh face a money-spinning tie against a Super League side in the fifth round. However Smith insists his side are only focused on taking it one game at a time.

He added: “We are delighted to still be involved and the win against Largs was something special.

“We know Lesmahagow will be a tricky test, but we have already beaten a side two leagues above us and I know the boys will want to go out and prove that they can consistently compete at that level.

“None of them froze last time out and it has created a real buzz around the place but we need to keep our attention on the task at hand.”
