Johnstone Burgh picked up their third win of the season on Saturday as they put an end to Thorniewood United’s unbeaten start.

Burgh ran out 2-0 winners at Keanie Park and now sit third in the Central District First Division with only goal difference between them and top spot.

The hosts got the action under way, but soon found themselves under pressure from the 2015 Central League Cup winners.

Burgh keeper Fraser Wilson was called into action early on to prevent Alan Brown from opening the scoring from close range.

As the half wore on there was little in the way of goalmouth action despite the ball spending a fair amount of time in both penalty areas, however, when there were chances to be had it was the visitors who found them.

Daly McSorley came close before Fraser Wilson was required once more to deny Chris Lennon from point blank range following a stramash in the box.

Half-time: Johnstone Burgh 0-0 Thorniewood Following the break the match’s momentum shifted in Burgh’s favour, Martin McIntyre and Jack Heron both came close following the restart as the hosts up the game’s tempo.

Johnstone Burgh then came close to breaking the deadlock when Ross Perrie rattled the crossbar from range.

The Keanie Park club continued to press and in the 77th minute they finally managed to find the back of the net.

Jason Hardie knocked the ball into the path of Jack HERON, who then fired Burgh into the lead despite the best efforts of the traveling keeper.

The hosts advantage was under threat minutes later when Thorniewood were awarded a penalty after Paul Sweeney inadvertently volleyed Declan Lafferty while attempting to clear the ball.

Chris Lennon hit the spot kick low, but Burgh’s Wilson made the save before Lennon smashed the rebound high and wide.

HARDIE would then go on to make the visitors pay for not taking their chances when he made it 2-0 with less than 10 minutes left on the clock.

Things then went from bad to worse for Thorniewood as keeper David Cherrie was giving his marching orders for handling the ball outside of the box.

Johnstone Burgh had little time to take advantage of their extra man as moments later the referee blow for full time.
