JOHNSTONE Burgh’s West of Scotland Cup dreams are over for another season as they were knocked out by Irvine Meadow on Saturday.

Burgh played host to the struggling Premier Division side at Keanie Park last Saturday as they looked to cause a cup upset.

However, it was the visitors that emerged victorious as they secured a 5-4 victory to book their place in the next round of the cup.

Burgh started the match well as they immediately put pressure on the Irvine outfit’s goal, visiting goalkeeper Graeme Shepherd has to be in fine form to turn behind early efforts from Jonathan McStay and Jason Hardie.

Irvine Meadow were slow to settle into the game, but once they did, they wasted little time in asserting themselves as the dominant side.

They opened the scoring on the 18th minute when Stuart McCann latched on to Shaun Fraser’s miss-hit shot to volley home from inside the box.

The travelling Meadow supporters wouldn’t have to wait long for another goal to celebrate as player/coach Kevin Rutkiewicz made it 2-0 moments later as he headed home a Ryan Dea set piece.

Burgh would then gift the visitors their third of the match when a weak backpass was easily scooped up by Shaun Fraser, who calmly rounded the onrushing Burgh goalkeeper before smashing the ball over the line from close range.

The half time whistle would put the hosts out their misery, but not before Gary McCann finished off Shaun Fraser’s through ball to make it 4-0 at the interval.

Burgh looked like a changed side in the second half and immediately pulled a goal back after the restart through Jack Heron in the 46th minute.

Sean Fitzharris continued the Burgh fightback five minutes later when he fired home beyond a helpless Irvine Meadow ‘keeper from 20 yards out.

The hosts continued to control the contest and pulled another goal back just after the hour mark to make it 4-3.

Meadow goalkeeper Graeme Shepherd saved Jason Hardie’s powerful shot, but was helpless to stop Jack Heron from rolling the ball into the empty net.

Burgh’s chance of completing the comeback where bolstered when Michael Keenan was sent off for head-butting Stephen McGarrigle.

However, it was the visitors that found the next goal when Gary McCann rounded the Burgh ‘keeper and restored his sides two-goal advantage.

Jason Hardie would pull another goal back for the Johnstone side, but it proved to be too little too late as Irvine Meadow did enough to see the match out, winning 5-4.
