Renfrew co-manager Martin Ferry has challenged his players to score as high a points tally as they can as their season heads into the final stages.

The Frew have just two more games left in their Super First Division campaign – and after Saturday’s 2-1 win at home to Kilsyth Rangers, promotion to the top flight still looks a realistic target.

Teams below Renfrew in the table have up to six games in hand over the New Western Park club – but Ferry says he’d rather have the points on the board than be playing catch-up.

He said: “We’ve told [the players] just to try and post as high a points tally as we can.

“There’s teams that are a wee bit behind us, but it’s up to them to win their games in hand, and they’ll be playing Monday, Wednesday, Saturday as well.

“We’re in a reasonably good position, but we can’t afford to think that it’s done yet.

“If we post a score and teams beat it, then you’ll have to throw your hands up and say ‘fair enough’, but if we can win our last two games we’ll be hard to catch.

“We’ve been in the top three for most of the season and deserve to be where we are, so the guys just need to believe in themselves and they’ll get there.”

Renfrew were made to work for their three points on Saturday, with substitute Dominic Innes grabbing the winner midway through the second half.

And Ferry praised his players after Frew bounced back from defeat against the same side just last month.

He said: “We played them about five or six weeks ago and lost 3-2. It was blowing a gale and to be honest we didn’t really cope with the conditions.

“But we had no excuse on Saturday so it was good to get the result.

“They were quite stuffy but I always thought we’d win it.”
