FREW make their point

Print | Email

RENFREW concluded their league campaign on a relative high with a well earned point in Ayrshire which shattered Girvan"s challenge to secure a play-off spot.

General manager Dougie Mitchell called for an improved performance following the weekend"s defeat at struggling Annabank.

And the Frew responded with a dogged display against one of the league"s notoriously stubborn sides.

The Frew had the edge over the home side early on and Gordon Cochrane opened the scoring after a neat interchange with strike partner Clinton Maxwell.

Renfrew then somehow squandered a whole host of chances to secure the three points with tired finishing their downfall.

Girvan did manage to stretch Renfrew"s defence at times, but were most dangerous from set-pieces and a Kevin Biggart header salvaged a draw for the seasiders.

The Ayrshire side could have made their play-off target, but were also guilty of missing a series of gilt-edged chances.

It was an unusually frantic game to find at the end of such a long season and the players will surely now looking forward to a summer of recuperation.

The Renfrew back room staff, however, will already be making plans for next year.

Already, Gordon Cochrane has confirmed he has played his last game for the club, deciding to retire.

Gaffer Mitchell recently hailed the professionalism of forward "Cokey" who spent two seasons at Western Park.

He said: 'That"s Cokey"s swan song - that"s him finished. But he"ll still be about the place.

'There were some great performances from a lot of individuals. I"m absolutely delighted, especially after Saturday which was like going back to the dark ages.

'I thought the big difference was Neil Shearer at the back. I"ve said that about the boy ever since he joined us and he was solid again.

'How we never won the game, we"ll never know. The amount of chances we made was incredible.

'We know we need come back to Girvan next season again and it"s given us a wee taster for it. But that"s us for another year.'

Renfrew: Sexton, Hammond, Fraser (Gilmour 72), Gordon, Dickie, Deas, Mort, Cochrane (Reid 64), Maxwell, Crowhurst. Subs: Marshall, Lauchlin and Gere.

STRUGGLING Ayrshire outfit Annbank produced a last-ditch recovery to secure their First Division status with a crucial victory.

The Western Park side produced a fairly dire and uninspiring display much to the bemusement of general manager Dougie Mitchell, who saw his side concede two soft goals.

He said: 'We were just shocking. It"s hard to watch ourselves playing so poorly when I know we can play better. I mean the second goal was just ridiculous.'

Renfrew: Sexton, Hammond, Gordon, Dickie, Fraser, Deas, Mort, Crowhurst, Lauchlin (Cochrane 65), Reid, Maxwell. Subs: Marshall.
