Johnstone Burgh 2 Greenock 2

JOHNSTONE Burgh kick-started their season with a 2-2 draw against fellow Central Second Divison side Greenock Juniors at Keanie Park on Saturday.

The Burgh looked a rejuvenated side and played some attractive football but fatigue gifted two goals to Greenock.

Colin Smith opened the scoring for the Burgh with a neat strike before veteran hitman Davie Brolly rifled home a 30-yard wonder strike to double his side's lead.

Former Burgh player Ryan McDonald pulled one back with a short-range finish before substitute Steven Docherty thundered home the equaliser to give his side a share of the spoils.

Burgh's co-manager Raymond Fallon is now looking for his side to build on their encouraging display against Greenock as they look to galvanise their promotion campaign.

He said: "Over the piece, I thought we should have won. Some of the football we played was fantastic. I think Johnstone Burgh played the best football they have in years, the ball on the deck, passing, movement - the way it should be played.

"I even overheard some of the guys behind the dugout saying how they enjoyed some of our moves.

"The two teams played good football, really. Greenock scored two good goals, the former Burgh player McDonald did really well and then the lad Docherty scored a terrific goal.

"Our boys were all great, there was not a poor player on the park. John Cuddihy came back and had a terrific game, big Davie (Brolly) was maybe going back to his younger years with that strike, that's two goals in two games now.

"The pre-season games were useful, we were beaten by Clydebank and Pollok but we still played some nice football.

"The management will just keep working away behind the scenes, John Cuddihy Sr has come in as a coach to help us out and has been really well for us.

"We have Port Glasgow coming up on Wednesday and we just need to get the football going again.

"Some of the younger guys are going to come in to try and get everyone playing and If we keep plugging away, I think we'll get a result."

Burgh host Port Glasgow at Keanie Park tonight (Wednesday) for a 7pm kick off before travelling to Alexandria on Saturday to face the Vale of Leven at 2pm.
