By Colin Hutton - Central Region 1 West Region 2
THE West Region football squad put on a fabulous show to see off their Central counterparts at Stenhousemuir FC's astroturf pitch.
With countless matches cancelled recently, this was the team's first game for a couple of months and as part of the rotation system used by the squad it was a first run-out for a lot of the boys.
Squad member Ruari Jespherson, 15, of Erskine YFC, in delighted to be involved with the select set-up and played his part in this match.
The game started well with both sides pressing, but it was Central who had the better of the opening exchanges.
And it was play down their right wing that saw the striker beat two defenders before getting in a low shot past keeper Scott Carden to give the home side the lead after 28 minutes. West started to get into their stride and there were some good attacks with Ian Auld hitting the post in the 35th minute.
Although thoroughly on top of the match, West failed to capitalise on their countless chances until a solo run from midfield by Stuart Walker, who weaved past three defenders before firing home from 18 yards.
Just as it looked as though the winner wouldn't come, the ball broke to Ian Auld in the 89th minute who whipped in a cross to the far post for Fraser Campbell to volley an inch perfect rocket past the keeper.
Coach Gerry Ronalds said he was delighted with the result and felt it was no less than the players deserved.
