GRITTY WIN: The Renfrew players had to battle for every ball Pictures by Alex Craig

RENFREW'S survival hopes received a huge boost on Saturday when they secured three crucial points against Dalry Thistle.

The Western Park side conceded early on but they battled back to seal a vital win, which takes them away from the relegation danger zone.

Debut boy Chris Cameron fired home the equaliser for the Frew before Brian Welsh's goal made sure of the win for Dougie Mitchell's side.

Despite Allan Prentice seeing red late on, Renfrew held on to the three points and Mitchell was overjoyed at the vital victory.

He said: "It wasn't the greatest performance but I don't think we will get that until we have a run of games. But it moves us up the table which gives us a boost.

"Chris Cameron got his first goal and had a great debut in midfield and Brian Welsh got the second. We lost an early goal which has been a problem for us this season.

"Alan Prentice was sent off. We spoke to him because it was a stupid sending off. It was a rash challenge and it could have been very damaging for the team.

"There is a long way to go in the season and I think Dalry Thistle will take points off other teams this season because they showed a lot of determination.

"It was a backs-to-the-wall performance and I'm delighted we got the three points."

A minutes silence was held at the start of the match in memory of former Frew player Andrew Morrison, 40, who was found dead recently.

Renfrew's attentions now turn to the West of Scotland Cup second round tie against Kirkintilloch Rob Roy.

The Lanarkshire side are a league above the Frew but Mitchell is confident his side can continue their resurgence and pull off a cup shock.

The Frew boss added: "The more games we can win, the better it can be for the team and if we can take a scalp from the Rob Roy game on Saturday then it will be a great boost for our league campaign.

"I have always said that the league campaign is most important but it would be great to get a run in the West of Scotland Cup.

"Rob Roy were knocked out the Scottish Junior Cup on Saturday so you don't know what to expect from them.

"They will either be low on confidence with their heads down or they will be all guns blazing. But we don't fear anyone at Western Park.

"Rob Roy like to get the ball down and play nice passing football but our pitch will have taken a beating which won't help them.

"We are getting into the nitty gritty part of the season. But we with thirteen league games left we still have a lot to play for and a win against Kirkintilloch Rob Roy will give us a push for the rest of the campaign."

Renfrew's West of Scotland Cup tie is at Western Park on Saturday (kick-off at 2pm).
