By Kristian Truelsen - Renfrew 0 Kilwinning Rangers 1
WESTERN Park assistant Colin Cameron insisted Renfrew’s misfiring side must improve in front of goal after seeing them waste a string of chances.
Renfrew let Kilwinning off the hook time after time on Saturday as the Buffs snatched all three points thanks to Gavin Brown’s first-half strike.
Even when Gers went down to 10 men when Ian Fulton was shown a straight red, shot-shy Frew still couldn’t punish them.
Cameron was raging they couldn’t take full advantage of the extra man and blasted their poor finishing.
He said: “We had a lot of the game in the second half and the goalkeeper had a great game.
“But the goalkeeper shouldn’t have had a chance to save some of the opportunities we had.
“We weren’t clinical enough in front of goal so it was disappointing. Kilwinning came looking for a point and they have got a win.
“But we weren’t clinical enough Stephen Reid’s miss at the start of the game set the tone and our best finisher never got a shot at goal.”
Stephen Reid had the first chance in the second minute when he tested Fraser Stewart with a low drive but the Buffs stopper blocked easily.
Frew keeper Kevin Bell had to be alert on 16 minutes when he brilliantly parried Kris Mitchell’s 20-yard pile-driver over the bar.
Reid blew another great chance on the half hour mark. Gers defender Lee Grant collided with Stewart and the Frew hitman had an open goal but flicked his shot over the bar.
Renfrew were left to rue that miss as Kilwinning grabbed the opener a minute later at the other end when Callum McGregor drilled in a low cross for Brown to tap home at the back post.
Ten minutes after the restart Fulton was given his marching orders when he pulled down Reid.
Frew charged forward in search of a leveller but Stewart pulled off two brilliant saves to make the points secure for Kilwinning.
Graham Mort had a glancing header denied by a fantastic point-blank save by Stewart before a Reid strike from 10 yards was bravely blocked by the Kilwinning keeper.
Renfrew are at home again on Saturday when they play Girvan (kick-off 2pm).
