LEAKED: Renfrew concede against Girvan, but the Ayrshire men couldn’t stop Matt McLean.
By Kristian Truelsen - Renfrew 3 Girvan 2
RELIEVED Renfrew boss Dougie Mitchell was delighted to see his side secure their second league win - but admitted their sloppy defending made it a nervy afternoon.
The Frew looked like they were on easy street when Matt McLean fired home his hat-trick with 11 minutes remaining to make it 3-1.
However, Girvan pulled a goal back through Scott McGilp in the closing stages.
And sub Alan Love came agonisingly close to snatching a point when his bullet header crashed off the bar in the last minute. Mitchell praised the Renfrew players and reckoned they merited the victory but insists they must cut out their defensive errors.
He said: “I thought we deserved the win and it just shows you the value of big Matt, he was on fire and done the job for us.
“They didn’t cause us too many problems but the two goals we lost were very poor.
“The bar has stopped us losing two points and I think Colin Cameron and Martin Ferry will have a word with the players because they were pretty cheap goals. But the win is a big boost for us.”
Renfrew deservedly took the lead on 27 minutes when McLean unleashed a spectacular looping shot from the edge of the box which sailed over Stuart Leavy.
But their celebrations didn’t last long as the Ayrshire side levelled seconds later at the other end when Neil Gilmour headed home at the back post following McGlib’s brilliant cross.
Despite that setback, the Western Park outfit regained the lead on the stroke of half time.
Stephen Reid was brought down in the penalty box by Lee McCrae and McLean stepped up to rifle home from the spot. The game turned ugly when both sides went down to 10 men on 74 minutes.
Gilmour was shown red for his horror challenge on sub Greg Miller. And Miller was then given his marching orders for trying to head-butt Gilmour and will now miss Renfrew’s next two games.
McLean eased the tension five minutes later when he darted past the Girvan backline before coolly slotting past Leavy for his third strike of the game.
McGilp gave Girvan a glimmer of hope with two minutes left but Renfrew hung on for the victory.
Renfrew are away to Glenafton on Saturday (kick-off 2pm).
