The 40-year-old, alongside co-manager Davie Brolly, revamped the Burgh squad in the summer with a number of youngsters making the step up from the under-21 and amateur ranks during the close season.

Their approach to building a winning side seems to be working with their destiny still in their own hands with seven league games remaining.

Smith insists he is loving life in the dugout, even though his charges make him feel a bit old at times.

He told Gazette Sport: “I’ve been involved in a few promotions but this one would be unique in that we have a really young squad.

“The guys that have come in have been different class and it would be a massive achievement for the club if we were to get promoted — they could be the future of this squad.

“There is a real youthfulness about the side and it makes me feel old at times — especially when some of the boys are inviting you to their 18th birthday parties.

“But in truth, the guys keep you young, keep you on your toes and they are a great bunch.” Smith and Brolly’s first furore into management has been anything but smooth with the pair taking on a number of roles behind the scenes to help the running of the club.

They have done everything from chapping the doors of potential signings to rolling and draining the pitch before last month’s tie with Rossvale.

Smith admits it has been hard going at times but stressed he wouldn’t change it for the world.

He added: “We have never stopped — it has been constant between training, matches and putting in the work off the field.

“We were out in the pouring rain the Friday before the Rossvale game and believe me when I say it was a real kick in the teeth when we got beat 5-0 the next day.

“But I would like to think the hard work has paid off. Obviously there has been hard times but it keeps you ticking over and it is all worthwhile when you come away with a win on a Saturday.” For full Johnstone Burgh and Renfrew match reports turn to page 62.
