JOHNSTONE Burgh crashed out of the Central League Cup in the second round thanks to a dose of penalty kick heartache.

Rob Roy began the stronger and Fraser Wilson had to be on his toes to prevent former Irvine Meadow striker Willie Sawyers from heading his side into the lead inside four minutes.

However, Burgh were not to be detered by the difference in league standings and also came close to opening the scoring when Jason Hardie headed a Steven Fitzpatrick cross just past the post.

From there on in the Rabs started putting increasing pressure on the Burgh backline. A McKenzie cross was headed over the bar by Duff before Flood brought out another fine save from Wilson.

But, Wilson was only prolonging the inevitable before Danny McKenzie sent over a pinpoint cross for Chris Duff to nod beyond the keeper in the ninth minute.

Burgh, not to be outdone, quickly levelled the scoreline moments later when HARDIE sent a powerful drive beyond Brown to level the scoring.

Wilson again had to be on his toes with another good save from Flood as the hosts continued to create a number of chances heading into half-time.

On the half-time whistle Sawyers thought he had restored the lead when he cooly slotted into the Burgh net but the referee pulled the striker back for a push.

Half-time: Rob Roy 1-1 Johnstone Burgh, The hosts came out flying once again and Sawyers should have scored in the 49th minute when he headed straight at Wilson’s legs from a Duff cross.

Duff himself was next to test Wilson with a rasping drive from distance.

Burgh were now camped out in their own half with Flood, Lee Davison and Ryan Tiffney all trying to break down the defence.

Wilson in fine form and had to be to save a number of low strikes from Flood and Sawyers before Finnigan fired high over the ball before the game went to penalties.

Duff then McKenzie scored from Rabs’ first two kicks with Burgh scoring their first and fourth. Rabs missed the third and fifth but Flood made the fourth count for the home side.

Brown made fantastic saves at the second, third and fifth penalties to send his side through to round three of the competition.
