RENFREW crashed to defeat last Wednesday night as Greenock secured a solid victory at New Western Park.

The match was just the second competitive game to be played at Renfrew’s brand new stadium, with the impressive facilities at New Western Park being a far cry from their old ground just a few hundred yards up the road.

And it was the home side who opened best on the artificial surface, dominating the opening 20 minutes, during which Greenock were rarely seen as an attacking force.

But Martin Campbell’s men gradually gained a foothold in the game, and took the lead just after the half-hour mark.

A pre-rehearsed move saw a corner kick flighted by Sean Doherty to the edge of the box, from where Thomas Docherty powered in a header which Renfrew keeper Mark Baird could only parry into the path of Allan Docherty, who scooped the rebound into the net.

Half-time: Renfrew 0-1 Greenock The second goal came on 64 minutes, as Paul Scott found himself in acres of space and homed in unchallenged towards the Renfrew box before slipping a low shot into the net.

Greenock were comfortably on top now, with their defence repelling the home attacks, and keeping ‘Frew danger man Alain Kinney, back at the club for a second spell, well at bay.

And they struck again on 77 minutes, when Doherty blasted in a shot from the left which took a slight deflection off a home defender before sailing over keeper Baird’s head and into the net.

Greenock manager Martin Campbell said: ‘’We were all over the place in the first 20 minutes, when Renfrew were definitely the better team. But then we came into it and played some really good football at times.

‘’It wasn’t a great performance, but we got off to the winning start I wanted, and overall I am pretty pleased.’’
