Renfrew 3 Lanark United 1
AFTER the disappointing cup defeat to local rivals Johnstone Burgh, Renfrew responded with a resounding win over title-chasing Lanark at Western Park.
The Frew effectively ended the Yowes" title dream and set themselves up nicely for their final home game of the season on Saturday against this year"s Scottish Cup finalists Clydebank.
Renfrew started brightly and constantly threatened the nervy Lanark back three with Clinton Maxwell finding space on the flanks time and time again.
Graeme Mort opened the scoring with a neat header from a Ryan Deas corner early in the second half before Lanark equalised with a long range free kick which swerved to fool keeper Dean Sexton.
Ryan Deas restored Renfrew"s lead when he chased down and mugged the Lanark defence before unleashing a vicious strike beyond the keeper.
Substitute Chris Lauchlin sealed the win when he ran onto a Clinton Maxwell pass to score with a smart finish.
Despite needing four more points to guarantee their safety, Frew Gaffer Dougie Mitchell is confident his side has done enough to avoid the drop.
He said: 'I thought we thoroughly deserved the win. It was a big difference from the Johnstone Burgh game, we more than matched them.
'It"s probably the win that keeps us in the division. It means we can enjoy the last three games, although we will be going to win them.
'Lanark have been at the top of the league since the start of the season and really, we"ve outplayed them. Four times we"ve played them and they haven"t beaten us.
'Ryan Deas and Graeme Mort all had smashing games and I don"t think Neil Shearer lost a ball in the air at all.'
RENFREW: Sexton, Hammond, Dickie, Fraser, Shearer, Deas, Mort (Lauchlin 70), Crowhurst, Stewart (Harvey 77), Maxwell, Gordon. SUBS: Marshall, Cochrane, Reid.
