THE brotherhood continues on Friday when Callum Hawkins takes to the Hampden track in the final of the 10,000m.

The Kilbarchan AAC runner will line up against the best the Commonwealth has to offer as he bids to continue his family’s fine form in this summer’s Games.

Following brother Derek’s impressive performance in the men’s marathon, Callum will be hoping to go one better with a good display in his event.

The 22-year-old has enjoyed a successful career thus far — and success in the 10,000m would provide a massive springboard for the remainder of the season.

It was a late call up for the youngster but he will be hoping to make the most of the opportunity, with the eyes of the world upon him, to put recent injury battles to one side.

Callum initally took up running at only eight-years-old when he was encouraged by his father, Robert Hawkins, a former Scottish champion, to take up the sport.

Despite beginning as a cross-country runner, Callum quickly showed his credentials, earning All-American status whilst competing for Butler University in Indiana, USA, in 2011.

It was in the States that Callum came to prominence, winning the 2011 Men’s Athlete of the Year award for the Great Lakes Region, which is awarded by the US Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association — becoming the first athlete from Butler to win the award.

The 10,000m kicks off at 8.05pm on Friday.
