INCHINNAN golfer Craig Pirie drove his way into the record books upon winning the Elderslie Trophy.
The 21-year-old has enjoyed a successful summer period which has also seen him pick up the Duncan Trophy last month when he saw off Stewart Watt of Old Ranfurly in the final of the matchplay competition.
However, it wasn’t plain sailing for the Renfrew Golf Club member as both the weather and an uninspiring first round card of 71 left him with a mountain to climb going into the last day of action.
But, the wet conditions didn’t deter Pirie as he battled to card a course record equaling 64 on his way to the top of the leaderboard.
In the end Pirie finished six shots clear of his nearest challenger, Owen Lavelle, playing on his home course, who finished with an overall one over 141.
Pirie told Gazette Sport: “It feels great to win a trophy that has been won by some of the best amateurs in the country.
“In all honesty, being three shots back following the first round, I wasn’t expecting it.
“I’m also very proud to set a new course record 64 in the process as it is my first course record.” Send your voting form to Pet Idol Competition, The Gazette, Carus House, 1st Floor, 201 Dumbarton Rd, Clydebank G81 4XJ.
