RENFREWSHIRE Golf Union are targeting 13 in a row as they tee off at the latest instalment of the West of Scotland League.

Such is the Renfrewshire side’s domination of the event over the course of a decade the other counties involved have vowed to prevent it happening again at this years contest.

A full strength side travelled to Troon Darnley to face an Ayrshire keen to prevent an away win.

The experienced Matthew Clark of Kilmacolm Golf Club led the way early on with a victory over Irvine’s John Shanks and won his match with a massive drive at the 360 yard 17th hole to 20 feet to win two and one.

Not to be outdone, a resurgent Gordon Stevenson of Whitecraigs birdied the same hole for the same result in his match against Ballochmyle’s Craig Hamilton.

Erskine’s Ross Clark, the team captain, was always in control of his battle with Irvine’s Gary Brydon winning three and two and club mate Michael Daily did even better to win five and four over Stephen Spence of Royal Troon.

A fantastic start was continued even further by Andrew Farmer of Kilmacolm who was back in the team and achieved the winning point against Ravenspark’s George Robertson.

Elsewhere Renfrew’s Craig Pirie put the disappointment of missing out on the Renfrewshire Order of Merit title to gain his maiden victory with a hard fought one hole win over Irvine’s Colin Gray.

Willie McMillan of Bonnyton, having won the final stroke play event of the season, was not in top form and lost five and four to Malcolm Pennycott of Whiting Bay.

Finally, Stewart Watt of Old Ranfurly could not withstand a late charge from Turnberry’s Gordon Boyle, three and one.

Renfrewshire now travel to Bishopbriggs in two weeks time. They will be without Clark, Stevenson, Farmer and Watt so will have to rely on the depth of talent in the area.
