Victory over Dunbartonshire at a rain-soaked Erskine Golf Club marked the hosts’ 13th consecutive West League Championship — and there to be more celebrations as the youth team grabbed the Youth Championship.

Despite their recent good form, Renfrewshire made tough work of the match-up early on.

In the first tie, Matt Clark, having traveled 150 miles from Aberdeen to play, was staring down the barrel at one down with three to play against Dalmuir’s Steven Stewart. However Clark showed the talent that has earned him numerous international call-ups to come back and win the contest one up.

Team captain, Ronnie Clark, and Michael Daily were on home soil — and they both took advantage with convincing wins over their opponents.

Kilmacolm’s Andy Farmer then put Renfrewshire four up with a five and three victory over Windyhill’s Kevin Smith — and Whitecraig’s Gordon Stevenson made the Championship trophy safe for a 13th year in a row when he shook hands with Bearsden’s Chris Prior at the 14th hole.

The remaining golfers were offered the choice of continuing their games or settling for halves and the comfort of the clubhouse. Much to the delight of the soaked spectators, they opted for the latter.

In the Youth Championship, Renfrewshire needed a victory over Dunbartonshire at Milngavie and for league leaders, Ayrshire, to lose against Lanarkshire to win the league. Ayrshire lost by three matches to five and Renfrewshire won 6.5 to 1.5 to make it a double.
