The event, sponsored by Star Refrigeration, was in town for the ninth consecutive year on the back of the increased interest in the sport.

Wheelchair curling is experiencing something of an ascendancy following being thrust into the limelight earlier this year when Team GB, all hailing from Scotland, claimed the bronze at the Sochi Winter Olympics.

The team was lead by skip Aileen Neilson, the inaugural winner of the Star’s Curling Championship.

This years winners were John Doyle and Daniel Cowan, the runners up were Paul Webster and Angela Higson This year’s competition was organised by the Scottish Wheelchair Curling Association, chaired by David Morgan.

Judy MacKenzie, former chair of the association, said: “This wheelchair curling Pairs event was first mooted within the Scottish Wheelchair Curling Association in 2005.

“It is a great opportunity for wheelchair users looking for an activity, to come into the Braehead curling rink and see what the sport of wheelchair curling is all about.” With free entry on the door, the event attracted a strong crowd to watch the cream of Scottish wheelchair curling. The greatly anticipated event in the curling world seen 40 matches take place over the two day period.

Star’s director of sales, Alan Walkinshaw – an avid fan of curling – attends the event each year and helped to hand out the prizes to the lucky winners on Sunday.

He said: “It has been a great run for Star sponsoring the National Wheelchair Pairs Curling Championship. Supporting this fantastic sporting event has been our pleasure and it is always a superb weekend out watching the games and cheering on the players.

“It also gives you the chance to meet inspirational people like our own local hero and Olympic medalist Aileen Neilson.” Full results are available at www.royalcaledoniancurlingclub.org.
