ON FORM: Jordan Grant poses with his reed hot putter and, inset, Adam Scott
By Andrew Miller
A RENFREW golfer has set an impressive new course record at his home club - knocking none other than Aussie pro Adam Scott off the top spot.
Jordan Grant carded an eight under par score of 64, beating the previous best by one shot, which had been set by former world number three Scott during British Open qualifying 10 years ago.
But the 22-year-old admitted this week that he feels there is still room for improvement after posting two bogeys in his otherwise flawless round.
He told Gazette Sport: "I did know what the course record was but as I was going round was trying not to think about it.
"I had a great start to my round and then was just solid on the way back, but it was my six under front nine which really set me on my way.
"I had a wee two foot putt at the last hole to secure the record, and I knew how important it was, so thankfully it fell in."
Scratch golfer Jordan, who is a joiner to trade, has played for most of his life due to his parents connections with Renfrew Golf Club and his round has shown that his hard work over the years has paid off.
He said: "My dad runs the shop at the club so I've been playing for as long as I can remember.
"I played seriously for a couple of years but decided I was not good enough and went and got a real job.
"So now I try not to take it too seriously, which I think has probably helped me relax a bit and helped my game to improve.
"Both my parents could not really believe it when it happened, but they are delighted.
"And it makes a change for me because normally it's my younger brother who is getting all the plaudits for his golf."
After completing his record round, which came earlier this month during the Speirs Trophy tournament, the celebrations began.
He added: "When I got back into the clubhouse I was getting champagne thrown at me and it feels amazing to finally get my card up on the wall in place of Adam Scott's.
"But I suppose the score could have been even better because I bogeyed the 14th and 18th.
"The 18th is an easy par four which I would normally par but even though I didn't think I was that nervous on the tee I hit a poor tee shot and had to chip it onto the green.
"However I can't see this score being beaten in the near future and to be honest I think one of the few ways it might get beaten is if Renfrew hosts the qualification for the Open again."
