Conmen wearing boiler suits and other indutrial-style clothing, making them look like they are from reputable companies, tried to blag their way into homes in Erskine, Bishopton and Langbank.
They tried to dupe homeowners into thinking that the severe weather had caused damage to the drains inside their homes or the tiles on their roofs.
Following the spike in criminal activity officers advised any Renfrewshire residents who are targeted by bogus callers to shut the door on them and phone the police.
Chief Inspector Arlene Smith, of Renfrew community police, advised: “Don’t let callers come to your door.
“I would also encourage neighbours to look out for each other, especially if you have elderly people as neighbours.
“If you see a works van outside your neighbours home, you’re not being out of line if you find out who they are and what they’re there for.
“You could be stopping your neighbour having money extorted from them — I’m encouraging you to be nosey.
She added: “Unfortunately at this time of year, leading into the spring, there is an increase in incidents of bogus worker crimes.”
