The Scottish Green Party's answer to Mhairi Black has secured a seat at Holyrood for the West of Scotland region.

At just 21, Ross Greer will be the youngest MSP to take his place in the Scottish Parliament after being selected as a list MSP with three Tories and three Labour candidates.

Greer's election comes after Black, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire South, became the youngest politician sitting in the UK parliament following her success at the General Election last year.

Greer said: "This is the first time we've ever elected anyone in the west of Scotland.

"It's shown just how much the Greens' reach has actually grown, communities that we're actually part of now that we haven't been before.

"It's obviously nice personally to be elected as the youngest member of parliament."

Others elected through the list system are Jamie Greene, Maurie Golden and Maurice Corry who prevailed for the resurgent Conservatives while Mary Fee, Neil Bibby and Ken Macintosh have secured seats for Labour who look destined to become the third largest party at Holyrood with the Tories replacing Kezia Dugdale's party the main opposition.

The SNP look to have lost their majority in the parliament which is likely to see them form alliances with the Greens or the Liberal Democrats, meaning 21-year-old Greer and his fellow Scottish Green Party MSPs could have a big part to play over the next five years.
