A POPULAR taxi driver's family hosted a fundraiser to raise cash for the hospice that cared for him during his final days.

Football fanatic and father-of-six George Will died after a battle with cancer, which was detected not long before he celebrated his 60th birthday in October 2015.

The Johnstone man's loving family rallied together to host a charity night in his memory after he sadly passed away at the Royal Alexandria Hospital in March.

The fundraiser took place on Friday, June 3 at the Elderslie Bowling Club raising £2556 for the St Vincent Hospice, which cared for George and supported the family.

His daughter-in law Shona Forbes, 26, and George's widower Anne Will, 53 helped organise the event which included a raffle with prizes ranging from signed football goods to hotel stays and meals at local eateries.

The family decided to host the fundraiser to take their mind off the sad passing and as a way of thanking the hospice.

Shona said: "He was diagnosed in October but we didn't want to know how long he had left to live.

"Even though we knew he had cancer it was still a shock to see him go.

"When he passed away we decided to host the event to keep the family busy.

"This is us giving back to the St Vincent Hospice who looked after him and supported us before he was taken to the RAH, where he passed away suddenly in the night."

George and Anne celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary shortly before he was diagnosed with cancer.

The two had been together for 38 years after meeting in a band and went on to have six children together; George, Diane, Linda, Jenny, Malcolm and Anne.

They are also grandparents to Jamie, Lauren, Danielle, Joseph, Jennifer, Shaun and one more on the way.

Shona said: "He was such an easy going guy and never one to grumble.

"Along with Anne, he was very much family orientated and cared so much for everyone.

"He was also known for working at Alpha Taxis in Johnstone so people knew him in the area.

"George was a big Rangers fan, when him and Anne were younger they would often go to matches and he would always watch the football after work.

"We'd like to to say a big thank you for St Vincent’s Hospice for all the support through a difficult time and we are proud of how much was raised for such a great charity.

"George as a husband, dad and papa is deeply missed by all the family."
