THE Lochwinnoch community are teaming together in a bid to refurbish facilities at much-loved football ground.

Viewfield Park, which now hosts Viewfield Rovers and Glentyan Thistle, has fallen into disrepair over the years after battles with weather and vandalism.

But now, with the help of the local community, there is hope that the building can be used to its full potential with fundraising for a new roof and toilet facilities.

The pitch is situated on Kildale Road in Lochwinnoch, with the area being used by the local primary school for its sports day - but having to hire out port-a-loos for such occasions.

Laurissa Stirrat, who's son has played for Glentyan Thistle Kids Club for a number of years and husband has been a coach for the last three years, decided that enough was enough.

Posting on the Lochwinnoch community Facebook group, Laurissa revealed she plans to host a race night at the local bowling club at 7pm on September 10 in a bid to raise funds - asking local businesses to donate any prizes.

The race night will cost £5 for entry with a buffet, with all funds going towards the repairs.

Laurissa has since set up an online fundraising page to help boost their efforts as well as the race night, aiming to raise the £575 needed to fix the roof and toilets.

Speaking about the building, she said: "The current facilities at the Viewfield park are in desprate need of upgrade. The pavilion itself was built many years ago and as such the elements and time has taken its toll on the building.

"The roof is in dire need of repair as it currently leaks and is causing serious damage to the internal walls and ceiling due to damp and mold. The toilet facilities, which consist of a outside urinal block are obviously not suitable for children and more appropriate facilities need to be made. "

Laurissa explained that the figure of £575 was agreed after talks with contractors following the donation of some materials needed.

She continued: "The crowdfunding page came about after myself and some of the other parents decided to arrange a fundrasing race night. The support from the community has been fantastic and slightly unexpected. Most of the local buisnesses in and around the area have offered help and support either in raffle donations or in discounts on food for the race night.

"The Crowdfunding page itself has received donation from many of the people in the village and it just goes to show what a solid and supportive community Lochwinnoch is. When you ask for help there's always someone willing to lend a hand.

"The children love that they now have their own park and parents love that the pitch is enclosed and they can drop there kids of and be assured that they are in a safe environment."

Laurissa added: "The local primary school currently use the ground to hold their annual sports day which always attracts a fantastic crowd.

"Unfortunately due to the lack of toilets the school always incur a hire fee for port-a-loos. With our fundraisers we are hoping that the the local community can utilize these facilities again.

"We would love to see the pavilion restored to its former glory and to be an integral part of Lochwinnoch."
