THE Olympic champions of tomorrow descended on Linwood Sports Centre to take part in Kilbarchan Athletic Club’s popular annual ‘Come and Try’ evening in 2003.
More than 40 young stars turned out for the event and the Kilbarchan club even boosted their membership as a direct result.
During the event, held at Linwood Sports Centre’s running track on April 8, the budding athletes were put through their paces by experienced Kilbarchan coaches.
The participants were given the opportunity to show what they could do in 100m, 600m and 800m races, as well as the high jump, long jump and shot put.
Star performers on the night included Gemma Cassidy, of Foxbar, who threw an impressive 6.90m in the shot, and Nile McMillan, who ran superbly in the under-11 girls’ 600m event.
Kilbarchan Athletic Club secretary Arthur Smith said: “One or two actually came up from Greenock, which surprised me, but we will certainly get a few new local members from the event.”
