A POLITICIAN has written to operators of the Renfrew to Yoker ferry to demand reassurances that commuters can expect a better service.

Renfrewshire North and West MSP Derek Mackay took action after the ferry was out of operation for around a week.

Passengers who were left stranded at either side of the route complained about a non-existent bus replacement service.

And there was no response when they called a contact telephone number posted at the Renfrew and Yoker slipways.

Mr Mackay also attempted to contact the operators, Clydelink, at their Glasgow offices, only to be unable to speak to anyone.

In his letter, the SNP man has asked Clydelink to explain why the ferry was not operating and confirm a date for its return.

Mr Mackay also advised the company that he finds his “inability to make any contact with Clydelink on behalf of his constituents as unacceptable.”

SPT removed a direct public sector ferry service in 2010, leaving the way open for a commercial operator to move in.

Mr Mackay said: “We are still none the wiser as to when the service will return and why the contact telephone number for passengers is switched off.

“I have been unable to make any contact with the company via telephone or e-mail, something which I find totally unacceptable.

“The route serves a historic link, as well as a practical route for people getting to work, shopping or visiting friends and family.

“As well as needing to know when the service will return, we need reassurances from the company that the issues encountered by passengers will be addressed and communication and service updates will be improved.”

There was no response from Clydelink when contacted by the Gazette.
