Over 150 children from Aitkenbar and St Peter's Primary Schools have been showing off their football skills after signing up to take part in their very own World Cup at the Bellsmyre Campus.

The 33 teams contained a mixture of pupils from both schools, which gave the children the opportunity to play alongside one another and mingle.

In keeping with the World Cup theme, each of the teams were named after one of the nations competing in this year's tournament, with Scotland also included as a lucky dip country.

A school spokesman said: "The event was a great success for both schools and the children thoroughly enjoyed it. We had some great football being played and good sportsmanship as well.

"It’s great seeing the children come together and celebrate the upcoming world cup and we hope to organise future events like this in the near future.

The World Cup involved pupils from P1 to 7 and took place over three days last week, with each of the sides competing against other teams from their age group.

The group games consisted of the different countries playing games for roughly eight to 10 minutes with winning teams gaining three points and losing teams gaining just 1 point.

The finals were held last Friday afternoon, with Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Belgium being crowned champions in P1, 2 and 3 respectively.

In P4 Poland were 4-2 winners over Iceland in the battle for first place with Arran Graham and Brian Sheen both bagging braces for the winning side.

In P5 Craig Bartlett scored twice as Spain won their final, while in P6 Owen Bell was the scorer for winners Argentina.

Finally in P7, Brazil were crowned champions with Owen Connelly and Lennon Deeley netting two each and Jack Fraser also getting a goal in the final.

All of the children who did not take part were able to spectate and make flags to support their classmates. Parents/Guardians also were invited to watch the finals on Friday afternoon.

The children in the first and second places teams received medals which were kindly donated by WDL Sports Development. We also received donations of water from Morrison’s and Asda stores in Dumbarton for the children as well.
