A Renfrewshire councillor is calling for investment in women’s football after Shelley Kerr’s team fired their way to the World Cup in France.
Audrey Doig, an SNP elected member for Linwood, Houston and Crosslee, wants the Scottish FA to pour more cash into the women’s side of the sport.

Scotland Women’s National Football Team qualified for the 2019 World Cup at the beginning of September after a 2-1 win over Albania saw them top their group.

Councillor Doig will table a motion at full council on Thursday, asking the local authority to congratulate the team and call on the Scottish FA to increase its funding for women’s football in Scotland.

Ahead of Thursday’s meeting, she said: “In the world of sport it’s not often that a women’s team can outperform a men’s team in the same sport but this is what the Scottish women’s football squad have managed to achieve.

“Do not get me wrong, I love men’s football and I grew up attending men’s football with my dad.

“I still love it and I hope all of Scotland will get behind the women’s team, just as we would for the men’s team.

“I totally applaud the effort the women’s team has put in and I hope the Scottish FA should look to the future and invest at least 10 per cent of their monies in the female game.”

The Scottish FA took the opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to developing the women’s game.

A spokesman for the body said: “Growing the girls’ and women’s game in Scotland is a key priority for the Scottish FA and is an area in which we have demonstrated unprecedented success in recent years, not least of which is the Scotland Women’s National Team recently qualifying for their first ever FIFA World Cup, having previously qualified for the UEFA Women’s Euros in 2017.

“This success is founded on significant investment in the game over the last ten years in both girls’ and women’s grassroots football and elite player development.”
