AN elderly forum has called on Renfrewshire Council to install a pedestrian crossing on a busy Linwood road following the tragic death of a pensioner.

Elizabeth Dunnion, 85, was killed after being hit by a car in Bridge of Weir Road as she made her way to Mass at St Conval’s Church.

The mother-of-three suffered a serious head injury following the collision with a black Mazda 3 on Saturday, October 6, and died at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, in Paisley, the next day as a result.

She was crossing the road close to Hart Street when the fatal accident happened.

Now Linwood’s elderly forum is calling for a pedestrian crossing to be installed in the road in a bid to prevent such tragedies happening in the future.

And Councillor Jim Sheridan, who represents Linwood, has given his backing to the call.

The Labour man said: “This is a long, busy road with no current crossing and it is on that basis I have contacted the local authority to assess the possibility of installing, if necessary, a crossing.”

The 27-year-old man who was driving the car which hit Mrs Dunnion escaped unscathed but was said to be “distraught” after the incident.

The death of Mrs Dunnion left her loved ones devastated.

Kaitlin Dunnion, her granddaughter, described her as an “excellent nana” who was very “family-orientated.”

Her 43-year-old daughter, Carolann Denvir, described her as “independent and able-bodied,” while admitting she felt “completely numb” over the sudden loss of her mum.

A Renfrewshire Council spokesman said: “Our sympathies go out to Elizabeth Dunnion’s family and friends.

“Road safety is of paramount importance to us and, following the outcome of the police investigation, we will consider any measures which could enhance safety.”
