A KIND-HEARTED volunteer worker was named as the 2008 Erskine Citizen of the Year.

Jane McCrimmon was presented with the award during a ceremony held at Park Mains High School.

Members of Erskine Community Council were out in force to honour the 61-year-old after she received a record number of public votes.

Community council chairman Sam Coulter said at the time: “I have great pride in presenting this shield to Jane. She is a very deserving winner.”

Mum-of-three Jane had spent the last 12 years carrying out various voluntary roles, including helping to run a kids’ club at the Church of the Nazarene, as well as working with senior citizens in the area.

She even travelled as far as Bulgaria, where she helped to clear up and rebuild a hospital, and was hoping to return to Rwanda, where she had previously worked with disadvantaged kids.

However, modest Jane, who was delighted to be joined at the awards ceremony by her 11-year-old grandson Lewis McLelland, took time to praise other local heroes.

She said: “I’m sure there are a lot more people that would deserve it.

“I’m accepting this on behalf of a dedicated team at the church. It really is a team effort.

“I’m chuffed to bits but, at first, I thought it was a joke.”

Jane also thanked the many family members who had travelled from across the country to support her and the work of the community council.

She added: “Their work goes unnoticed but it is events like this that get the community together.”
