A BARRHEAD church held a coffee morning with a difference, inspired by the centenary of Armistice Day.

Poppies were the theme for the event, which came just a day before the 100-year anniversary of the end of the First World War.

Home baking was decorated with poppies and served up on poppy-patterned napkins.

The event at St Andrew’s Church was also the first opportunity many visitors had to see the knitted poppy display outside the building, which took many people several months to put together.

And, according to church treasurer Catrina Buttar, it wasn’t just coffee and cakes people were keen to buy.

She told the Barrhead News: “We had a lady who asked if she could buy a couple of the knitted poppies but everything was attached to the display, so I came home on Saturday night and knitted her a couple, which she picked up on Sunday morning.

“She then came along to church wearing them. That was lovely.

“We were delighted with the coffee morning, as it was really mobbed. We had a great turnout and so many people helping with the baking. It was a great effort.”

As with the poppy display and previous coffee mornings, the money raised on the day will go towards the cost of constructing a new community hall at the church.

More than £840 was raised through the coffee morning alone.
