FEMALE family members are being encouraged to keep fit together at East Renfrewshire’s weekly Active Women and Girls classes.

Classes are held every Monday evening at Eastwood High School, in Newton Mearns, and feature a variety of sports that mums and daughters can take part in together, from basketball and netball to tennis, athletics and badminton.

The aim is to keep women and girls physically active and maintain fitness levels while having fun with each other.

Caroline Wardle and her eight-year-old daughter Isla, from Eaglesham, have been attending the classes.

“We were looking for something that we could do together as I wanted to keep active,” said Caroline. “My husband found the class and we’ve been coming together ever since.

“We like playing tennis and dodgeball is good fun too. Isla really enjoys the warm-up activities, like playing tig, and she gets to try out different sports.

“She also does gymnastics and tennis and goes to Cubs, so she’s definitely keeping busy and fit.”

Up to two children can attend for free per adult and the classes run in blocks, with sessions split into two age categories.

Girls aged five to eight can attend the 6pm hour-long session, while those aged nine to 12 can go along from 7pm until 8pm.

David McLeish, of East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure, said: “We’d love to see more families getting involved.”

Bookings are now being taken for a 12-week block of Active Women and Girls sessions at Eastwood High that runs from November 19 to February 25 and costs £60.
