A MONUMENT has been unveiled to pay tribute to two former munitions factories.

The tribute is at Dargavel Village, in Bishopton, where thousands of new homes are being built.

It commemorates the old Bishopton and Georgetown factories which once stood there.

The former Royal Ordnance Factory site, operational from 1915 to 2002, produced explosives and propellants and was also home to the Georgetown Filling Factory, responsible for assembling quick-firing ammunition.

The monument was unveiled by site owners BAE Systems ahead of the nation commemorating 100 years since the end of the First World War. Situated at Craigton Park, the cannon is positioned to allow the sun to shine onto it through an opening in the western stone wall.
