A GROUP of mini-heroes were praised for coming to the rescue of a Renfrew florist a decade ago.

Five plucky pupils from Trinity High ran to help a shopkeeper on the town’s High Street when her store was held up.

Marion Shaw, owner of Budding Blooms, was left badly shaken after she was confronted by a knife-wielding thug who demanded cash from the till.

Luckily, 47-year-old Marion escaped unhurt – and later paid tribute to the S1 and S2 students, saying she would be “eternally grateful” for their help.

Recalling her ordeal at the time, the Renfrew mum-of-three added: “I said to the guy ‘you’re not getting my money’ but he had pulled a knife.

“I think because I was screaming so much that he ran off and I went out into the street.

“There were adults around the area but it was only these five kids who came over to see if I was alright.”

The pupils, aged 12 and 13, had been waiting on their school bus to take them home when the incident happened and were keeping their eye on Marion ever since.

Marion added: “The next morning, they came over at break time to see if I was okay and have been popping in every day.

“Kids these days get a bad press but I’m genuinely touched by what they did for me.”

Proud depute headteacher at Trinity High, Stephen Colligan, said: “We have received a letter of thanks from the owner of the flower shop and a letter from the chief inspector at the local police station, acknowledging the boys’ outstanding behaviour.”

PC Stuart McLean also praised the pupils.

He said: “The boys displayed great citizenship, which we have been encouraging in the school, and have enhanced the school’s reputation.”
