A CONCERNED councillor has called for a “much valued” green space in Johnstone town centre to be given a new lease of life.

Derek Bibby claims the area in Ludovic Square has been neglected and wants to see the introduction of flowers and plants, as well as a fresh lick of paint for its park benches.

The Labour man has also called for restoration work to an ornate fountain in the square, as its inscriptions can no longer be read.

Cllr Bibby told The Gazette: “This is an important green space in the middle of town and is much valued by the people of Johnstone.

“Despite its proximity to the town centre, it is a peaceful setting and it should be made more attractive.

“These are proposals that Renfrewshire Council can discuss with Johnstone Community Council.”

Cllr Bibby is hoping cash from Renfrewshire Council’s Green Spaces, Parks and Play Areas and Villages Investment Fund, which totals almost £2million, can be set aside for improvements at Ludovic Square.

He added: “Johnstone must get its fair share of this fund.”

The proposals are being backed by community council secretary Iain McMillan, who said the green space is in need of “a lot of improvements and a tidy-up.”

Mr McMillan added: “I know Houstoun Square is the centrepiece of the town but Ludovic Square is a bit quieter and gives people time to relax.

“Being right next to the town hall, which the council spent a lot of money on, the park could be ideal for wedding pictures.

“There is an opportunity there that we on the community council would back.”

A spokesperson for Renfrewshire Council said: “Local constituted community groups and volunteers can apply for funding to the Green Spaces, Parks and Play Areas and Villages Investment Fund to improve underused or neglected green spaces and take forward projects which will strengthen the character, identity and heritage of their local community.

“So far, we haven’t received any applications for Ludovic Square.

“Floral and shrub beds at the square were removed previously to increase public safety and open the area up and, at this time, there are no plans for any further streetscape restoration works in Johnstone.”
